Concept explainers
In a general sense, how do skeletal muscles produce movement?
To explain: In general, the ways in which skeletal muscles produce movement.
Introduction: In an adult, 40 to 50% of the body weight is contributed by skeletal muscles. It is primarily attached to the skeleton of the body but also found at the opening of urinary tracts and gastrointestinal tracts.
Explanation of Solution
Skeletal muscles are mainly attached to the bones in groups or in pairs. These muscles help in movement of bones around joints by creating contraction and relaxation of muscles. Contraction of muscles that are attached to the bones produce large movements involved in localized movement and running.

- By what mechanism are skeletal muscles induced to relax?arrow_forwardList the principal functions of skeletal muscles.arrow_forwardMuscular endurance is defined as the: O a) ability of a muscle to contract repeatedly over an extended period of time b) amount of force a muscle can produce with a single maximal effort O c) ability to move the joints through a full range of motion O d) amount of time required to contract a muscle completelyarrow_forward
- Slow twitch muscle fibers are characterized by all of the following EXCEPT: O a) used in endurance type of activities O b) contract rapidly and forcefully Oc) resistant to fatigue O d) have a direct relationship to the oxidative energy systemarrow_forwardHow is smooth muscle contraction similar to skeletal musclecontraction?arrow_forwardA muscle fiber is the same thing as a: a) myofibril. b) myocyte. c) myofilament. d) fascicle.arrow_forward
- What is the difference between the proximal and distal attachment of a skeletal muscle?arrow_forwardAs we begin to learn about muscles, how does the "design" of the different muscles types help with their function? (ie. what kind of control do we have of each type [smooth, cardiac, and skeletal] and how that effects the role of that type of muscle).arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements are true? Multiple Choice Muscles work in antagonistic pairs because if one muscle shortens during contraction, the opposing muscle across the joint must relax. Muscles work in antagonistic pairs because tendons lengthen during contraction. Muscles work in antagonistic pairs because muscles lengthen during contraction. Muscles work in antagonistic pairs because if one muscle pushes during contraction, the opposing muscle across the joint must pull.arrow_forward
