Summary Introduction

To determine:

The major functions of the skeletal system.

Introduction:

The skeletal system is one of the most important systems of the body that shapes our body. It is composed of the bones of the skeleton, ligaments, cartilages and other connective tissues which all interconnect the bones and together forms the skeletal system of the body.

Explanation of Solution

The major functions of the skeletal system are:

  • It provides the structural support and framework to the entire body.
  • It stores the minerals and lipids in the body. The most prominent mineral found in the skeleton is calcium that maintains the normal concentration of the Ca2+ and PO43- ions in the body fluids. It also stores lipids within the yellow born marrow that provides energy.
  • It is chief site for hematopoiesis; a process by which the blood cells are produced thus and it also provides the immunity indirectly.
  • It protects several soft tissues that reside within the skeletal systems such as brain, heart, lungs and others.
  • It also provides leverage and help in locomotion of the body.
Conclusion

The skeletal system is one of the most important systems of the body that shapes our body.
