Answer to Problem 125P

The effective spring constant of the series combination is k2.

Explanation of Solution

Assume that the two springs have springs constants k1 and k2 respectively. The force that each spring experiences will be the same (otherwise the springs will buckle) and it will be the same as the force on the mass.

Write the equation for the spring force of the spring with spring constant k1.

  F=k1x1

Here, F is the spring force and x1 is the compression of the spring with spring constant k1.

Rewrite the above equation for x1 .

  x1=Fk1        (I)

Write the equation for the spring force of the spring with spring constant k2 .

  F=k2x2

Here, x2 is the compression of the spring with spring constant k2 .

Rewrite the above equation for x2 .

  x2=Fk2        (II)

Write the equation for the force on the mass.

  F=keqx

Here, keq is the effective spring constant of the series combination and x is the net displacement.

Rewrite the above equation for x .

  x=Fkeq        (III)

Write the equation for the net displacement.

  x=x1+x2

Put equations (I) and (II) in the above equation.

  x=Fk1+(Fk2)=Fk1Fk2

Put the above equation in equation (III).

  Fk1Fk2=Fkeq1keq=1k1+1k2        (IV)

Conclusion:

The spring constants of the two springs are equal and is equal to k .

Substitute k for k1 and k2 in equation (IV) to find keq .

  1keq=1k+1k=2kk2keq=k2

Therefore, the effective spring constant of the series combination is k2 .

Answer to Problem 125P

The effective spring constant of the parallel combination is 2k .

Explanation of Solution

In parallel combination, the force on the mass will be equal to the sum of the two individual spring forces.

Write the expression for the force on the mass.

  F=F1+F2        (V)

Here, F is the force on the mass, F1 is the spring force of the spring with spring constant k1 and F2 is the spring force of the spring with spring constant k2 .

The two springs will be compressed along the same distance in parallel combination.

Write the equation for the spring force of the spring with spring constant k1 .

  F1=k1x

Here, x is the amount of compression

Write the equation for the spring force of the spring with spring constant k2 .

  F2=k2x

Write the equation for the force on the mass.

  F=keqx

Put the above three equations in equation (V).

  keqx=k1x+(k2x)=k1xk2xkeq=k1+k2        (VI)

Conclusion:

Substitute k for k1 and k2 in equation (VI) to find keq .

  keq=k+k=2k

Therefore, the effective spring constant of the parallel combination is 2k.
