Concept explainers
To describe: The type of signal that the interferon belongs to upregulate the antiviral proteins in response to viral infection.
Introduction: Interferons are a family of naturally occurring proteins that are secreted by the immune cells such as white blood cells, fibroblast, epithelial cells, and natural killer cells. There are three classes of interferons that are present namely alpha, beta, and gamma interferons. It gives protection against the viral infection.
Explanation of Solution
The type I interferons namely interferon alpha and gamma are secreted by nucleated cells after viral infection, whereas the type II interferons namely interferon gamma are secreted by the T cells. The interferon is the chemical signal that is produced as the response to viral infection. It involves in the paracrine signaling in which it binds to the receptor of neighboring cells to upregulate the antiviral proteins. It also leads to the digestion of viral proteins and viral DNA.
