Summary Introduction

To analyze:

If the lipid bilayer were to contain the CFTR molecule, what would pass through the membrane if you add a 1 M solution of sodium chloride on the left side and a 1.5 M solution of potassium ions on the right. Assume that there is an equal amount of water on each side at the start of the experiment.

Introduction:

The CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) membrane allows the passage of chloride ions from the left side to the right side of the CFTR membrane. The increase in the ion concentration on the right side of the CFTR membrane initiates the movement of water from the left side to the right side of the CFTR membrane.
