Question
Chapter 56.2, Problem 2C
Summary Introduction
To determine: Environmental factors that are most important in determining the adaptations of organisms that live in aquatic environments.
Introduction: The ecosystem present in a water body is known as aquatic ecosystem. It is of two types, namely marine ecosystem and fresh water ecosystems. There are three main ecological categories of organisms present in both fresh water and marine ecosystems. These are plankton (free-floating), nekton (strongly swimming), and benthos (bottom-dwelling).

Describe at least one adaptation that allows a) planktonic organisms such as diatoms or jellyfish to stay in the photo zone (where light penetrates the water), and b) marine birds to thrive in the salt marsh/tidal environment.

- You discover a new species of bacteria that grows in aquatic environments with high salt levels. While studying these bacteria, you note that their internal environment is similar to the salt concentrations in their surroundings. You also discover that the internal salt concentrations of the bacteria change as the salt concentration in their environment changes. The new species can tolerate small changes in this way, but dies from large changes because it has no mechanism for altering its own internal salt levels.
