INTERPRET DATA Examine Figure 56-24. How many of the sampled species are found in the nonserpentine soil? in the serpentine soil? in the ecotone? What generalization about ecotones do these data support?
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The various plant species found in the two communities (yellow and blue) and in the ecotone between them (green) are shown in the graph. The ecotone had a greater richness than either adjoining community.

- If only one half of the flora in the world existed in 2110 (perhaps due to deforestation), what do you predict the atmospheric carbon level would be ? How would you change the simulation to reflect this? What is the relationship between increased carbon in the ocean and increased carbon in the soil? How else might carbon be transferred to soil? Using the data generated by the simulation, determine the mathematical relationship between the percentage increase in fossil fuel consumption and the increase in atmospheric carbon. Is the relationship linear?arrow_forwardPls give answer and explain in detailarrow_forwardIn the context of ecological succession, classify each example as facilitation, inhibition, or tolerance. 1) Facilitation Inhibition Tolerance Answer Bank Lichens can survive on bare rock surfaces where rooted plants cannot live. The deep shade under mature heoch trees keeps birch tree seeds from sprouting. The dense rocts of cogon grass outcompete other grasses for water and nutrients. Plant rocts growing in cracks in bare ock assist with soil formation. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria in alder roots increase the soil's nitrogen content. Oaks can sprout and grow in the dim light under pines and birches.arrow_forward

- Which of the following accurately describes life in soils? A: Soil food webs lack complexity compared to above-ground ecosystems. B: Soils contain both decomposers and predators that perform important functions. C: We would need to collect a large soil sample size to find many species. D: Soil biota sometimes support plants in taking up nutrients. E: B and D. Suggest possible solutions that would reduce the impacts of nutrient and pesticide runoff, while incorporating the three considerations of human sustainability. In other words, come up with a solution that would reduce ecological impacts of pesticide and nutrient runoff, while allowing farmers to ultimately meet their income needs in a socially equitable way (does not exploit anyone in the process). • Show lessarrow_forward

Nothofagus dombeyi was the species that showed the highest value of transpiration and is considered a fast-growing pioneer species, while Laureliopsis philippiana had a lower transpiration and is a slow-growing species to spare.
