WRITE ABOUT A THEME: INTERACTIONS In Batesian mimicry, a palatable species gains protection by mimicking an unpalatable one. Imagine that individuals of d palatable, brightly colored fly species are blown to three remote islands. The first island has no predators of that species; the second has predators but no similarly colored, unpalatable species; and the third has both predators and a similarly colored, unpalatable species. In a short essay (100-150 words), predict what might happen to the coloration of the palatable species on each island through time if coloration is a genetically controlled trait. Explain your predictions.

- I’m not sure how to approach this problem can you explain how to get the answer?arrow_forwardThink about a predator-prey system that perfectly follows Lotka-Volterra dynamics. The search efficiency parameter (a) represents how quickly the predator finds and kills its prey. What would happen if most the predator population had a parasite that made them less effective predators? Infected animals find and kill prey less frequently (that is, the parasite caused the value of the search efficiency parameter to decline). the populations would still cycle; the amplitude of prey and predator would increase Othe populations would no longer cycle; the prey would increase and the predator would go extinct the populations would no longer cycle; the prey would go extinct and the predator would increase the populations would still cycle; the amplitude of prey and predator would decline the predator and prey populations would no longer cycle; the parasite and the predator populations would cycle insteadarrow_forwardThe competitive dominance hierarchy (left) and food web (right) diagrams below show simplified species relationships for a large meadow habitat in the midwestern United States. - Question:- Identify at least 4 different cause that are used by migratory animals to find their way during migration. Then, pick one of the cause and explain how we know that at least one species or organism uses these cues.arrow_forwardMimicry of yellowjacket wasps by clearwing moths is an example of a harmless species resembling a dangerous one. What is the ad-vantage to the moth of this form of mimicry? What is the advan-tage to a dangerous species of mimicking another dangerous species?arrow_forwardforest sites than in forest fragments, whereas there were no significant differences between fragments of different sizes. These results provide further evidence for the effects of habitat size on the phorid-Acromyrmex system in a tropical rain forest, based on the abundance of parasitoids both as adults in the field and as reared immature phorids in the laboratory. Phorid parasitized leafcutter ants were most abundant in areas of continuous forest, and less abundant in the forest fragments. O Phorid flies are important parasitoids of leafcutter ants nd leafcutter ants can be found in Brazil's Southeastern Both phorid flies Atlantic Forest. The study provides evidence that this parasitoid-host interaction between phorid flies and leafcutter ant differs between continuous forest and forest fragments. Phorid flies were just as abundant in forest fragments as they were in continuous forest, but were less successful in parasitizing leafcutter ants.arrow_forward
- Which of the following statements most accurately describes the example of species interactions for ants, plants and aphids Question 2 options: The burdock plant is negatively affected by a heavy aphid investation, the ants are negatively affected by the aphids and aphids are positively affected by the ants. The burdock plant is negatively affected by a heavy aphid investation, the ants are positively affected by the aphids and aphids are not affected by the ants The burdock plant is negatively affected by a heavy aphid investation, the ants are positively affected by the aphids and aphids are positively affected by the ants. The burdock plant is not affected by a heavy aphid investation, the ants are positively affected by the aphids and aphids are positively affected by the ants.arrow_forwardI need help identifying which assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is most affected, then indicating whether what is being described will act to establish or violate equilibrium, and lastly, whether the statement will increase or decrease that population’s genetic variation. Corals synchronize spawning to occur on a single night during a particular tidal event, such as a spring tide. On that night individuals release sperm and eggs into the water, which then form zygotes. Larvae are carried off by currents and settle elsewhere. What assumption is this breeding style affecting and what will it do to VG of that coral species?arrow_forwardDirection: You must Answer no.1 to no. 5. Identification only. - Define predation. How does the predator-prey relationship differ from the parasite-host relationship? Why is the evolutionary race be-tween predator and prey one that the predator cannot afford to win?arrow_forwardWhat is the Predator Release Hypothesis? Explain how it works. What is ONE principle or idea that we studied in this course that can be illustrated using it (other than predation).
