The pressure of carbon dioxide (CO2) in torrs, pascals and lb/in2 is to be calculated.

Concept introduction:

The Pressure of a gas can be measured with the help of a device known as a manometer. There are basically two types of manometer. First one is closed-end manometer and the second one is open-end manometer.

In closed-end manometer, the difference in column height (Δh) is equal to the gas pressure.

Pgas=Δh

In an open-end manometer, the gas pressure is measured either by adding or subtracting Δh from the atmospheric pressure (Patm).

Case I: When Pgas is less than Patm then the gas pressure is calculated as follows:

Pgas=PatmΔh

Case II: When Pgas is more than Patm then the gas pressure is being calculated as follows:

Pgas=Patm+Δh

The conversion factor to convert mmHg to torrs is as follows:

1 mmHg = 1 torr

The conversion factor to convert mmHg to atm is as follows:

760 mmHg=1atm

The conversion factor to convert atm to pascal is as follows:

1 atm=1.01325×105 Pascal

The conversion factor to covert pressure from atm to lb/in2 is as follows:

1 atm=14.7 lb/in2
