Textbook Question
Chapter 51, Problem 10TYU
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY Researchers are very interested in studying Identical twins separated at birth and raised apart. So far, the data reveal that such twins frequently have similar personalities, mannerisms, habits, and interests. What general question do you think researchers hope to answer by studying such twins? Why do identical twins make good subjects for this research? What are the potential pitfalls of this research? What abuses might occur if the studies are not evaluated critically? Explain your thinking.

- Do you agree or disagree why? Prior to this video I had not been introduced to the concept of genetically modified babies or "designer babies". However, a concept that was brought up in comparison to the designer babies was IVF babies. This concept is more familiar to me and made me think of the great possibilities designer babies could bring, but at what cost? As IVF first became popular it seemed to be well known that was was a possibility for well-off financially families. Although designer babies may have benefits such as lowering the risk to develop hereditary diseases, I don't think this concept would be widely accessible to varying income levels.arrow_forwardLifespan development science has two primary research designs – longitudinal and cross-sectional. Are there other potential ethical concerns? Do you agree with the observations about how the research study is being conducted and the possible issues involved? How would you recommend addressing the potential ethical issues in the study? This study analyzed the research trends in the field of digital twins by examining metadata from 9639 peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2023. We processed the metadata using an NLP-based toolkit and manually labeled each article with its most relevant application field. Using the KCN methodology, we performed temporal research trend analysis, mapping popular sensing technologies to six application fields and identifying representative examples of digital twins in each field. For researchers, this analysis provides a comprehensive view of the field's development, identifying key areas for future exploration. For architects, the findings highlight technological applications and…arrow_forward
- Do you agree or disagree why? I think this topic is sort of tricky and I still can't decide if I feel like we should allow this. I think there many good pros as well as cons when it comes to changing a babies genes and traits. I understand why people would want to make sure their baby is born healthy and doesn't have any diseases like Alzheimers or Huntington's disease. At the same time, I am a big believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason so part of my feels like it is wrong to alter a baby because you never know what life could've been like. ( I hope what I am trying to say makes sense) There is also that risk of the baby getting more sick and other things happening which makes me feel like it is not worth the risk to alter them. In the article I read it mentions how this can make people superior to others which I also think will cause some problems in the future.arrow_forwardShare your thoughts about how hard/easy to spot Bad Science and Pseudoscience articles What are the dangers, consequences of bad / pseudoscience science articles How can trials be manipulated to produce false results and mislead doctors and consumers and what are the implications of such false resultsarrow_forwardIn vitro fertilization (IVF) is a common assistive reproductive technology for couples who are struggling to conceive naturally; however, the success rate of IVF is, at best, about 55%. Researchers seeking to improve the success of IVF need to observe the interaction between sperm and eggs in order to better understand the factors that favour fertilization. Obviously, larger sperm and eggs would be easier to observe, even with the aid of microscopy. On this basis, which of the following vertebrate groups might be a good model for studying IVF because they are likely contain species with large sperm and eggs? Group of answer choices a) fish b) amphibians c) reptiles d) birds e) mammalsarrow_forward
