Chapter 5, Problem 1RQ
Describe the basic elements of bone tissue.
Expert Solution & Answer
Summary Introduction
To describe: The basic elements of bone tissue.
Introduction: The skeletal system is composed of bones, cartilage, and connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons. It helps in the movement, support, protection, production of blood cells, and storage of calcium. The primary function of bones is to provide structural support to the soft connective tissues. These contribute in hematopoiesis and function as storage reserves for minerals.
Explanation of Solution
The basic elements of bone tissue are as follows:
- • Bones are covered by a two-layered solid membrane known as the periosteum.
- • The outer membrane is dense connective tissue.
- • The inner membrane contains osteoblasts that are mainly known as bone formers.
- • The inner membrane secretes collagen, and elastin.
- • Mineralization of calcium occurs at the inner membrane that hardens the bone matrix.
