Answer to Problem 1P

The traffic flow is 1.125veh/hr , the speed is 35.15mi/hr and the density is 32veh/mi .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The average headway is 3.2sec .

The average spacing of passing is 165ft .

Formula Used:

Write the expression for the traffic flow.

  q=1h¯....................(I)

Here, q is the traffic flow and h¯ is the time headway.

Write the expression for the average traffic speed.

  u=s¯h¯....................(II)

Here, u is the average traffic speed, s¯ is the average spacing.

Write the expression for the density.

  k=qu....................(III)

Here, k is the traffic density.

Calculation:

Substitute 3.2sec for h¯ in equation (I).

  q=13.2sec=0.3125veh/sec×3600veh/hr1veh/sec=1125veh/hr

Substitute 3.2sec for h¯ and 165ft for s¯ in equation (II).

  u=( 165ft× ( 1/ 5280 )mi 1ft )( 3.2sec× ( 1/ 3600 )hr 1sec )=( 0.03125 8.89× 10 4 )mi/hr=35.15mi/hr

Substitute 35.15mi/hr for u and 1.125veh/hr for q in equation (III).

  k=1,125veh/hr35.15mi/hr=32veh/mi

Conclusion:

Thus, the traffic flow is 1.125veh/hr , the speed is 35.15mi/hr and the density is 32veh/mi .
