El merengue y la bachata are the two most important music in the Dominican Republic. The most important instruments that the people from Dominican Republic use to produce merengue are La güira, la tambora and the accordión. The most important songs that we can hear from the merengue music are: El virao, el venao y la loba. The origin of the merengue music comes from Dominican Republic after a Battle called La Batalla de Talanquer. Merengue is so popular that it is well known in all over the world but it is mainly danced in Dominican Republic and Latin America. The most famous merengue singers are Wilfrido Vargas, Sergio Vargas, Cuco Valoy and Fernando Villalona. If you can, I suggest you play some merengue songs in your class and invite your classmates to dance. That’s how the people from the Dominican Republic do. They dance anywhere.
