Concept explainers
The organization of an organism’s nervous system correlates with how the animal interacts with its environment. How do the different nervous systems of clams and squid illustrate this generalization?
To determine: The way in which the different nervous systems of clams and squid interact with its environment.
Introduction: The nervous system controls and coordinates all the activities of the animals. The squids have the more sophisticated nervous system, while the clams have a relatively simple nervous system.
Explanation of Solution
In the animal group, the organization of nervous system often correlates with the environment. Sessile and slow-moving molluscs such as clams have little cephalization and simple sense organs. The active predatory cephalopod molluscs such as squid have the sophisticated nervous system of any invertebrate. They contain a large image forming eyes, and brain with millions of neurons, which correlate with their environment as well as with their learning ability.

On the other hand, excessive alcohol consumption in the long term can cause disturbances in brain performance, including disturbances in memory, attention, coordination, and locomotion. How does alcohol affect the functioning of nerve cells and the central nervous system? What is the mechanism that occurs? Based on information from the literature, analyze what will happen to coordination and locomotion in someone who is addicted to alcohol and consumes large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time.arrow_forwardA neuron of the median giant fiber of an earthworm would respond to an increased intensity of a stimulus by: Increasing the amplitude of action potentials generated Increasing its resting membrane potential Increasing the frequency of action potentials generated Increasing the conduction velocity of action potentials generatedarrow_forward

How would the neuron's action potential be affected by conotoxin? Explain, using at least TWO of the following terms: threshold, depolarization, repolarization, hyperpolarization, summation, IPSP, EPSP, exocytosis C. If conotoxin affected a somatic motor neuron, would this toxin cause muscle weakness or increased muscle tension? Neurons are dynamic cells with the ability to make a vast number of connections, to respond incredibly quickly to stimuli, and to initiate movements on the basis of those stimuli. They are the focus of intense research because failures in physiology can lead to devastating illnesses. Why are neurons only found in animals? Based on what this article says about neuron function, why wouldn't they be helpful for plants or microorganisms?arrow_forwardWhich of the following would you NOT expect with respect to variation in neural conduction velocity? Neural conduction speed increases over developmental time as Schwann cells synthesize myelin sheaths, insulating neurons Neural conduction velocity is higher in invertebrate species with insulating sheaths functionally equivalent to vertebrate myelin Neurons and species with larger axon diameters should have greater conduction velocities Neural networks with greater serial processing (i.e., lines of connecting neurons) should have greater neural conduction velocities. The thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine and thyroxine) have a range of roles in regulating growth and metabolism. Thyroid hormones act throughout the body to regulate protein synthesis, long bone growth, and neural maturation. This represents an ______ effect of thyroid hormones. At the same time, through some unknown mechanism, application of thyroid hormones results in an immediate reduction in body temperature, which…arrow_forward

Many neurotoxins have been used extensively in physiological studies of neurons. When comparing tetrodotoxin found in puffer fish and batrachotoxins from poison dart-frogs, the former had no effect on a neurons resting potential but completely stopped its action potential, whereas the later toxin immediately initiates depolarization of a neuron but prevents repolarization.
