Concept introduction: The limb bud development is determined by two regions – the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) and the zone of polarizing activity (ZPA). The AER region determines the growth of a limb along the proximal-distal axis. The ZPA region determines the growth of the limb along the anterior-posterior axis.
