To determine: The factor that contributes more to the increase in the rate of diffusion between increase in area and increase in pressure difference.
Introduction: Simple diffusion occurs spontaneously without the aid of any proteins or carriers while facilitated diffusion requires protein carriers to take place. Diffusion takes place along the concentration gradient and does not require any energy for movement.
Explanation of Solution
The rate of diffusion is affected by several factors like increase in surface area, temperature, viscosity, thickness, distance, and so on. The diffusion increases with the increase in the surface area of the membrane and decreases when the diffusing area is too small. The pressure difference is the major driving force for the movement of the particles from the area of high pressure to the area of low pressure. so, if the pressure difference between the two areas is large then the rate of the diffusion is rapidly increased than the increase in the rate when the area is large. The molecules can also rush through the site of smaller area if the difference in the pressure is large enough to increase the rate of diffusion.
