Concept explainers
To determine:
The decisions by foresters that can balance the benefits and hazards of controlled burns.
Introduction:
Forest fire is a natural phenomenon that helps in maintaining the forest health. In natural process, the intensity of forest fire is low. This causes burning of all old leaf litter which provides space for germination of new seedlings. The old plants that burnt during the forest fire provide their nutrients to the soil helping the forest to acquire the lost nutrients.
To determine:
An alternative to controlled burn along with its advantages and disadvantages.
Introduction:
Wildfires are important to maintain the ecosystem to regenerate aging climax forests. It promotes the growth of new seedlings by clearing or providing the space.

- What are two reasons for deforestation in tropical rain forests? What is the main reason for deforestation of boreal forests?arrow_forwardA. Most varieties of Sedum are not native plants in Albany or New York City. Why may it be dangerous to introduce a new species to an established ecosystem?B. How does a green roof reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?C. Why is it important to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?D. State one disadvantage of a green roof. E. What are other ways the owners or architects of a building can reduce its carbon footprint?arrow_forwardA family travels from New York City to Costa Rica three times a year for a vacation. The family would like to purchase some forested land in the Catskills, keeping the trees intact as an offset to the carbon dioxide they produce travelling each year. How much forest must they purchase? Use the following assumptions to measure the carbon offset provided by this intact forest. • The biomass of the forest increases at an annual rate of 2.8 × 105 kg/ha. • The forest biomass is 45% carbon by mass. • There are four people in the family. • 0.2 kg of CO2 is produced each mile per person on the flight. • The round-trip distance is 4,500 miles. • There are 2.47 acres in one hectare. 1. Calculate the mass of carbon, in kilograms, that is accumulated and stored in 1.0 ha of this forest in one year. 2. Calculate the mass of carbon, in kilograms, that is emitted by the family as a result of their round-trip flights to Costa Rica each year. 3. Calculate the number of acres of forest that must be…arrow_forward

- How do controlled burns and the "Let It Burn" policy contribute to forest health and sustainable forestry?arrow_forwardDeforestation and loss of biodiversity is a problem in many forests in different parts of the world. In no more than 400 words, discuss the effects and consequences due to deforestation and loss of biodiversity in rain forests.arrow_forwardThere are many different sources of biomass and many ways of harnessing energy from biomass. Discuss one that seems particularly beneficial to you, and one with which you see problems. What bioenergy sources and strategies do you think our society should focus on investing in?arrow_forward
- In my environmental science course, our assinment is to study coal and natural gas. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using coal?arrow_forwardTo successfully obtain Forest Stewardship Council certification, a forest operation mustarrow_forwardAll of the following are reasons why tropical rain forests less likely to grow back as secondary growth forests after widespread deforestation (when compared to temperate forests) EXCEPT: Question 25 options: - All of the above are significant reasons why tropical rain forests may not grow back after widespread deforestation. The soil of tropical rain forests contains much less organic matter and nutrients compared to the soil of temperate forests. - The trees in tropical rain forests are largely responsible for returning water vapor back to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration, so when they are gone, the rains come less frequently. - A larger percentage of the nutrients in a tropical rain forest system are stored in the trees themselves than in temperate forests. - Almost all tropical rain forest species are wind-pollinated, which is less reliable than insect-pollination so tree reproduction is affected more by “chance.”arrow_forward
