Digestion happens physically and chemically. In physical digestion the food is churned and mixed and pushed further into the digestive tract. In chemical digestion the food is broken down into its constituent parts that are absorbable. Different enzymes are required for the chemical digestion. Accessory glands, like liver and pancreas secrete these enzymes.
