Concept explainers
To explain: The conversion of square meters into square feet and the calculation of area of the small intestine in square feet.
Introduction: Small intestine is an organ of the alimentary canal and is divided into three parts. The duodenum is C-shaped, first part that connects it with the stomach. The jejunum is a highly coiled portion in the middle, and ileum connects the small intestine with the large intestine.
Explanation of Solution
The length of the small intestine is approximately 4.5 m. However, the surface area of the small intestine increases because of the presence of finger-like projections called villi and microvilli. The surface area of small intestine is around 300 m2.
The conversion of square meters into square feet is as follows:
Since the surface area of the small intestine is 300 m2, the surface area in square feet will be calculated as follows:

BIOLOGY
- Detail how the functions of the large intestine contributeto homeostasis. Give some examples.arrow_forwardList the parts of the human digestive tract that food passesthrough, and note whether chemical and/or mechanicaldigestion occurs in each.arrow_forwardName two components of the digestive system that perform mechanical digestion. Describe how mechanical digestion contributes to acquiring nutrients from food.arrow_forward
- Write down the function of large intestine.arrow_forwardWith the two menus provided, answer the question below: Menu 1: Roasted chicken with mashed potatoes (mostly proteins and carbohydrates) Menu 2: Pasta with alfredo saude and cheese (mostly carbohydrates, dairy products and lipids) Question: Clearly indicate where/when nutrient absorption takes place in the digestive tractarrow_forwardCan you help me the name of the digestive system model?arrow_forward
- Give typing answer with explanation and conclusionarrow_forwardExplain step by step in detailed words what happens during the: Digestion of Carbohydrates Digestion of Proteins Digestion of Lipids/Fats (Give Examples)arrow_forwardCompare the structure of the circular folds, villi, and microvilli (the three structures that increase the surface area of the small intestine)arrow_forward
- The apparent digestibility, if the nutrient consumed is 95, and nutrient excreted is 35, is: use following equation Apparent digestibility = (Nutrients intake -nutrients in feces)/(nutrients i intake ) ×100 = ---- (%) 76% 17% 63.15% 35%arrow_forwardList one of the factors increasing motility in the large intestine?arrow_forwardYou will only describe how proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids are digested in the body. The goal is to get to a point where there are only amino acids(from proteins), fatty acids (from lipids), and glucose (from starch). Enzymes are only part of chemical digestion. Provide a simple description of Ingestion, Movement, Mechanical digestions, absorption, and elimination related to your food. Lastly describe what glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids will be used once they are absorbed into the bloodstream.arrow_forward
