Chapter 44, Problem 15PIAT
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The use of plain diethyl ether by researchers to dissolve the queen pheromone for the control treatment in the experiment.

Introduction:

The diethyl ether is a volatile compound present in the pheromones of the honey bees. The pheromone produced by the queen honeybee has diethyl ether present as a solvent in it. Furthermore, the diethyl ether may be involved in the inhibition of the ovarian growth.

The pheromone produced by the queen bee is capable of attracting the worker and the drones, however, the growth of ovaries is retarded in the worker bees. In order to test the hypothesis, the researcher exposed the worker bees to the chemically synthesized pheromones.

The ovary development score for worker bees was recorded in the study. In the graph shown below, the higher score indicates for the full development of ovaries. Furthermore, *** signifies for the value of probability less than 0.001.

Which of the following statements is correct regarding the experiments performed by Roger Payne? The fact that the owl failed to strike the mouse, but struck the leaf tied to it suggests that the owl was using acoustic cues for target localization. а. b. They supported the conclusion that the owl used thermal detection to hunt because the owls still struck a dummy target made of a leaf which was colder than the surrounding ground. С. The arena filled with sand had scattered leaves in it to mimic the owl's wild habitat. d. Their results remained inconclusive as to whether the owls used their sense of smell because the dummy target made of a leaf which the owls struck did not have any distinct smell. Between a moving leaf on sand vs a moving mouse on sand, the owl would strike them both equally as targets. е.
The following experiment was set up to understand how catechol oxidase converts catechol oxidase catechol into the brown product called benzoquinone and how it can be inhibited.  Answer the questions based on the following tube contents and results: Tube 1: 0 ml catechol, 0.5 ml Potato extract, 2.5ml buffer, 0.5 ml inhibitor.  After observation there was no color development.  Tube 2: 0.5 ml catechol, 0.5 ml Potato extract, 2 ml buffer, 0.5 ml inhibitor.  After observation there was no color development.  Tube 3: 1 ml catechol, 0.5 ml Potato extract, 1.5 ml buffer, 0.5 ml inhibitor.  After observation the solution turned brown. Tube 4: 2 ml catechol, 0.5 ml Potato extract, 0.5 ml buffer, 0.5 ml inhibitor.  After observation the solution turned brown.   Which tube (1, 2, 3, or 4) was the control for this experiment?  Which experimental component was the substrate  Which experimental combonent contained the enzyme  Based on these results was the inibhitor a competative inhibitor or…
