Chapter 42, Problem 13TYU
Summary Introduction
To determine:
Why the dung burying process by the beetles is important for cycling of the nutrients and for primary production.
Introduction:
Dung beetles feed on dung and reproduce in dung as well, the characteristics of detritivores. Dung beetles complete their whole life cycle in dung from mating to deposition of eggs. According to their action, they fall into the group rollers, tunnelers and dwellers. Burying of dung by these beetles helps the replenishment of soil and break down of complex organic matter to simpler ones.

Think about the Bucket Orchid's use of secondary metabolites. How does the Bucket Orchid use secondary metabolites to “manipulate” the bee’s activities? Carefully assess each event you see in the video. There is evidence for 5 specific and distinct ways that the orchid 'manipulates' the bees activities (so there are 5 distinct possible answers). Please briefly describe 4 uses of secondary metabolites by the orchid and make sure you are specific and each one is distinct from the others.

1)What is one interesting or surprising thing you learned from the video you watched?
2)It’s unlikely that you personally hunt wolves or whales, and equally unlikely that you are responsible for importing rabbits and foxes to Australia as shown in these videos. But your actions do affect ecosystems. What is one thing you can start doing or stop doing right away to help protect the earth’s ecosystems? Explain how the thing you chose helps to protect ecosystems.
Based on the text on mosquitoes eating:
1.Identify abiotic factors that support the survival and reproduction of the mosquitoes and why the pest needs this factors
2. Identify biotic factors that support the survival and reproduction of the mosquitoes and why the pest needs this factors
3.Predict what factors in the environment can be altered to decrease the survival and reproduction of the pest and why?

- The Problem: Bean beetles, Callosobruchus maculatus, get their lifetime nutrition from the bean seeds (family Fabaceae) on which their mother lays her eggs. The specific bean on which each egg is laid determines the future success of the larva that develops from that egg. Choosing where to lay an egg is the most important decision a female bean beetle will make for her offspring, yet even within one bean species the seeds available may be very different in quality. Seeds vary in size (even if from the same plant), so the amount of resource available to larvae on different beans will not be the same. Seed mass may vary by as much as 50% among mung beans purchased in a local store, a species on which Callosobruchus develops normally and may complete its lifecycle. During what stage do beetles find the majority of their nutrition? tadpole larval juvenile adultarrow_forwardThe Problem: Bean beetles, Callosobruchus maculatus, get their lifetime nutrition from the bean seeds (family Fabaceae) on which their mother lays her eggs.
