Interpretation:
The difference between ionic bond and covalent bond is to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Molecular compounds contain only nonmetals, which are covalently bonded to each other. This bonding is a result of the sharing of valence electrons between the atoms.
An ionic bond is formed between the atoms of metals and nonmetals, where the metal acts as the cation and the nonmetal acts as the anion. Bond formation occurs by the
complete transfer of electrons between the atoms.
An ionic bond is relatively more stable than a covalent bond because there is a balance of charge between the atoms involved in it (cations and anions), and therefore, the species formed are neutral in nature.
