Food Goblin Supermarkets use both cashiers and baggers to serve customers at check out. During the first 6 hours of each workday (Monday-Friday), 4 cashiers and 2 baggers serve approximately 20 customers per hour. A cashier and a bagger who require approximately 5 minutes at checkout and 5 minutes at bagging serve each customer.
- Calculate the utilization of both cashiers and baggers.
- Assume that both baggers and cashiers are cross trained to perform both activities so that they can serve customers independently. Customers are now both checked and their groceries bagged by one individual. Further, assume that it takes 12 minutes for one individual to both cash out and bag each customer’s groceries. Calculate the utilization of this new group of 6 cross-trained employees.

- The utilization of baggers is Food Goblin Supermarkets use both cashiers and baggers to serve customers at check out. During the first 7 hours of each workday (Monday-Friday), 6 cashiers and 2 baggers serve approximately 25 customers per hour. A cashier and a bagger who require approximately 6 minutes at checkout and 4 minutes at bagging serve each customer. a. The utilization of cashiers is 41.7%. Suppose an average of 18 customersarrive each hour, and the average checkout time for acustomer is 4 minutes. Interarrival times and service timesare exponential, and the system may be modeled as anM/M/s/GD/∞/∞ queuing system. - We run a fresh produce stand at farmer’s market where we sell avocados and artichokes. Each morning, a supplier drops off bags of these products. We can buy up to 200 bags of avocados and up to 175 bags of artichokes each morning. We resell the bags to customers throughout the day. The contribution margin of avocados is $15/bag; the contribution margin of artichokes is $20/bag. We sell at least twice as many bags of avocados as we do artichokes. - Netflix is a DVD movie rental company. They stock 50 DVDs of a recent blockbuster movie available for rental. Their rental fee is $4 per DVD per day. The inter-arrival time between rental requests for this movie is 2.5 hours, on average, with a standard deviation of 2.5 hours. Demand is steady throughout a 24-hour day (there is no evidence of other arrival patterns). Assume that if all copies of the DVD are rented, then customers are willing to wait for the next one to become available. Also, assume shipping is instantaneous (the shipping time is zero days). A DVD is rented, on average, for 5 days with a standard deviation of 3 days. What is the average number of unrented DVDs in Netflix’s warehouse?
