Chapter 4, Problem 47RE
Calorie Expenditure Ginger’s exercise regimen includes doing tai chi, riding a unicycle, and fencing. She has at most 10 hours per week to devote to these activities. Her fencing partner can work with her at most only 2 hours per week. She wants the total time she does tai chi to be at least twice as long as she unicycles. According to a website, a 130-pound person like Ginger will burn an average of 236 calories per hour doing tai chi, 295 calories per hour riding a unicycle, and 354 calories per hour fencing. Source: NutriStrategy.com.
- (a) How many hours per week should Ginger spend on each activity to maximize the number of calories she burns? What is the maximum number of calories she will burn?
- (b) Show how the solution from part (a) can be found without using the simplex method by considering the constraints and the number of calories for each activity.
