Concept Introduction:

The standard enthalpy change for a reaction ΔH0 is given in terms of the difference in the standard enthalpy of formation of the products and that of reactants.

  ΔH0 = npΔHf0(products) - nrΔHf0(reactants)  ------(1)

Here, np and nr are the number of moles of the products and reactants

The enthalpy of formation at temperature T is related to the standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K by the following equation:

  ΔHf0(T) = ΔHf0(298.15 K) + 298.15T ΔCpdT ------(2)where ΔCp=Cp(products)Cp(reactants) i.e. the difference in the heatcapacities of the products and reactants
