Chapter 4, Problem 4.4IA

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The liquid-vapour phase boundary for the given vapour pressure data has to be plotted.

Concept introduction: The liquid vapour phase boundary for the vapour pressure has a positive slope.  This shows that as the pressure increases the temperature also increases and thus as pressure increases the boiling point also increases.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The standard boiling point of methane has to be estimated.

Concept introduction: The standard boiling temperature is the temperature at which the liquid is in equilibrium with the standard pressure of 1bar (0.1MPa).

(c)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The standard enthalpy of vapourization of methane (at standard boiling point) given that molar volumes of liquid and vapour at standard boiling temperature are 3.80×102dm3mol-1 and 8.89dm3mol-1 respectively has to be calculated

Concept introduction: The enthalpy of vapourization of a substance is derived from Clausisus-Clayperon equation which states the change in pressure with change in temperature.
