Equations for the preparation reactions of HCl and HF from its metal halides with Sulfuric acid and HBr from PBr3 with water are should be written and reason for why not preparation of HBr and HI are from metal halides with Sulfuric acid should be explained.

Concept introduction:

Preparation of Hydrogen halides:

  • Metal halides are reacting with concentrated Sulfuric acid to produce Hydrogen halides.
  • In HBr and HI are not able to prepared by above method because of Sulfuric acid is a strong oxidizing agent than Br2 and I2 so it would oxidize Br- and I- ions to Br2 and I2 .
  • The alternative method of HBr preparation is PBr3 is treated with water to produces HBr.

Balanced equation:

  • Balanced equation is equation for the chemical reaction, which is written by the number of atoms for each element and total charges of ions are equal in the reaction for in both reactants and the products sides.
