Suppose that a shot putter can put a shot at the world-class speed v0 = 15.00 m/s and at a height of 2.160 m. What horizontal distance would the shot travel if the launch angle θ0 is (a) 45.00° and (b) 42.00°? The answers indicate that the angle of 45°, which maximizes the range of projectile motion, does not maximize the horizontal distance when the launch and landing are at different heights.

- A trebuchet (a catapult) is used to launch a fiery projectile towards a castle. The projectile is 5.0 m above the ground when launched at a velocity of 25 m/s at an angle of 35° above the horizontal. Assuming that the projectile lands on the level ground inside the castle walls answer the following questions. (a) How long was the projectile in the air? (b) How far horizontally did the projectile travel from where it was launched to where it hit the ground? (c) What was the velocity of the projectile just before it hit the ground? (d) Include aarrow_forwardA golfer tees off from the top of a rise, giving the golf ball an initial velocity of 43.0 m/s at an angle of 30.0° above the horizontal. The ball strikes the fairway a horizontal distance of 180 m from the tee. Assume the fairway is level. (a) How high is the rise above the fairway? (b) What is the speed of the ball as it strikes the fairway?arrow_forwardA projectile is launched from the top of the cliff of height h with initial velocity v0 and launch angle ? with respect to the horizontal. It later hits the ground. Derive an expression for the magnitude and direction angle of the velocity as the object hits the ground in terms of some or all of the variables given in the problem h, v0 , ?, and g.arrow_forward
- At what initial speed must the basketball player in the figure throw the ball, at angle 00 = 60° above the horizontal, to make the foul shot? The horizontal distances are d, = 1.0 ft and d2 = 12 ft, and the heights are h, = 7.3 ft and h2 = 10 ft.arrow_forwardA certain airplane has a speed of 315.0 km/h and is diving at an angle of ? = 35° below the horizontal when the pilot releases a radar decoy (see Figure below). The horizontal distance between the release point and the point where the decoy strikes the ground is d = 733 m. How high was the release point?arrow_forwardTwo cats are sitting side-by-side on a fence when they’re startled bya dog. The cats jump off the fence with equal speeds, but differentinitial angles relative to the horizontal. Cat 1 jumps at an angle of45° above the horizontal; cat 2 jumps at an angle of 45° below thehorizontal. Is the landing speed of cat 1 greater than, less than, orequal to the landing speed of cat 2?arrow_forward
- If a projectile is launched upward with a speed of 7.44 m/s, and at an angle of 40.1° above horizontal, what is the hang time of this projectile If a projectile is launched upward with a speed of 39.1 m/s, and at an angle of 10.4° above horizontal, what is the range of this projectile?arrow_forwardAn object is launched at 37 m/s in a direction making an angle of 19° above with the horizontal. Assume it is launched 0.6 above the ground and it landed at a height of 1.2 m above the ground after it has reached its maximum height, determine its range (m) (maximum horizontal distance it can reach).arrow_forwardA guy is standing on a relatively flat surface (h = 0 m). A pesky drone is flying overhead at a height of 120 m above the ground and with a velocity of 15 m/s. The guy gets annoyed and fires an arrow with an initial velocity of 100 m/s the instant the horizontal distance between him and the drone is 5 m. At what angle must he fire the arrow in order to hit the drone? Take the guy's height to be 1.8 m. Just to clarify, would shooting an arrow follow the same rules as a regular projectile motion problem? Thanks.arrow_forward
- World’s Longest Par 3. The tee of the world’s longest par 3 sits atop South Africa’s Hanglip Mountain at 400.0 m above the green and can only be reached by helicopter. The horizontal distance to the green is 359.0 m. Neglect air resistance and answer the following questions. (a) If a golfer launches a shot that is 40° with respect to the horizontal, what initial velocity must she give the ball? (b) What is the time to reach the green?arrow_forwardProblem #1: A cannonball is fired off a cliff at an angle of 25 degrees with respect to the horizontal. The cliff is 80 m high. The initial speed of the rock is 50 m/s. (a) How high above the edge of the cliff does the rock rise? (b) How far has it moved horizontally when it is at maximum altitude? (c) How long after the release does it hit the ground? (d) What is the range of the rock? (e) When the cannonball hits the ground what is the magnitude of its total velocity?arrow_forwardA young boy standing next to a lake is throwing rocks at a buoy that is 11 m from the shore. For oneparticular throw, the boy throws a rock from an initial position of 1.0 m above the ground at an angle of 55◦above the horizontal, and after reaching a maximum height of 5.1 m above the water, the rock continues onits parabolic path and lands right on top of the buoy.(a) What is the initial speed of the rock?(b) How tall is the buoy relative to the surface of the water? You can assume that the boy is standing rightat the edge of the water, and the ground where he is standing is level with the surface of the waterarrow_forward
