Chapter 4, Problem 3CYU
Summary Introduction
To review:
The effects on the body if mucus is not released by the mucous membrane or if mucus is released in excess.
Introduction:
Mucus is an aqueous thick secretion released by the mucous membranes, which protects the underlying epithelium. It is secreted by goblet cells. It is released across the epithelium of the surface of the body. It prevents the foreign particles and pathogens from entering our body.

Mucous cells may secrete excess mucus in response to irritants. What symptoms might this produce in the (a) digestive tract or (b) respiratory tract?
Antacids such as Zantac, help to prevent hearturn, by blocking histamine receptors. This results in a reduction of the production and excretion of stomach acid. Which of the following cells would be most affected by this drug?
A.
chief cells
B.
parietal cells
C.
mucous neck cells
D.
surface epithelial cells
