What is a transformer?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The definition of transformer.

Explanation of Solution

The transformer is a magnetically operated electrical machine which changes the values of current, voltage or impedance without a change in the frequency of the supply. It works on the principle of magnetic induction. The transformer consists of two windings, first one is primary and second one is secondary winding. The primary winding carries the input supply and secondary winding carries the output supply.

The load is connected to secondary winding of the transformer. The change in input voltage or current depends on the number of turns in the primary winding and number of turns of wire in the secondary winding. If a transformer raises the value of the input current or voltage, then it is called a step up transformer and if it decreases the input voltage or current then the transformer is called a step down transformer. The input supply of transformer is always an AC supply.
