a.
To determine: The dependent variable in the graph.
Introduction: The structure of the cell was first observed and analyzed by Robert Hooke. The cell structure is complicated machinery consisting of various intracellular structures called organelles and support structures called cytoskeletal elements. The nucleus is the organelle that controls and regulates all the activities taking place inside a cell.
a.

Explanation of Solution
The dependent variable in the graph is ubiquitin. The process of cellular content degradation is an energy-driven process that requires energy for proceeding. The presence of ATP is responsible for activating the ubiquitin that attaches to the cellular organelle and results in the degradation of the attached organelle or molecule. Hence, the dependent variable is ubiquitin.
b.
To determine: The culture that represents a higher concentration of target protein.
Introduction: Different parts of the cell, along with the cell organelles, are responsible for controlling different activities of the cell.
b.

Explanation of Solution
The culture that has a higher concentration of target protein is the Ubi- culture as it lacks the ubiquitin which prevents it from activating it under ATP and thus, incapable of degrading the target protein. After 100 minutes, the activated ubiquitin in ubi+ culture will degrade the protein and its concentration will decrease. However, in the culture where the activation of ubiquitin did not take place, the target protein will have a higher concentration.

If you add heterotrophic respiration and autotrophic respiration together and then subtract that value from gross primary productivity, then you have a more refined estimate of ecosystem carbon storage than NEE.
