Summary Introduction
Clostridium perfringens, C. septicum, and C. novyi are Gram-positive, endospore-forming rods termed the histotoxic clostridia. These clostridium species are able to generate a necrotizing infection of skeletal muscle known as gas gangrene or clostridial myonecrosis. However, the most common cause of gas gangrene is Clostridium perfringens.
