In de-etiolation process, the first step is the reception of signals from the light. This reception is done by phytochrome that is present in the plasma membrane. This phytochrome acts as a first messenger that initiates the de-etiolation.

The leaves have different ethnomedical uses according to their country of origin. The most important uses in traditional medicine, scientifically validated in pre-clinical tests, are for inflammation, pain, infections, diabetes and cancer.
