Chapter 38.2, Problem 1C
Summary Introduction
To describe: The way in which signal reception, signal transduction, and altered cell activity is part of the general mechanism of action for auxin.
Introduction: Plant hormones are chemical molecules produced by plants in extremely low concentration for regulating growth and development. There are five major hormones involved in the growth process. They are auxin, gibberellin, ethylene, abscisic acid, and cytokinin. Each of these hormones has their own functions at specific locations. The presence of these hormones in a definite amount is very essential for the normal growth and development of the plant.

Plant cells communicate in a variety of ways to elicit cellular responses. In the figure below the plant is responding the presence of light with the release of auxin. Auxin was first discovered for its ability to promote growth in plants. It is a plant hormone that inhibits the lengthening and stimulate the formation of lateral roots and root hairs.
a) Describe the plant’s response to the presence of light. (refer to picture)

(b) Explain the role that auxin has in eliciting the plant’s response.
How does the signal transduction pathway for auxin that leads to cell wall loosening. Include the receptors ABP and ARF.
How does the auxin pathway possibly differ from the 'generic' signal transduction pathway? Consider expressing the cellular components that differ in the absence and presence of auxin.
