Chapter 38, Problem 5TYU
Summary Introduction
Introduction: In fertilization fusion of gametes occurs after the two sperm reach the female gametophyte. One sperm fertilizes the egg and form zygote. The second sperm combines with the two polar nuclei and form a triploid (3n) nucleus in the center of central cell of the female gametophyte. This cell will form endosperm. The union of two sperm cells with different nuclei of the female gametophyte is called double fertilization.

On the surfaces of their cone scales are ovules, which later become seeds. These ovules are said to be naked because they are not completely enclosed by diploid tissue (as the ovules of angiosperms are). This characteristic gives the gymnosperms their name; gymnos is a Greek word meaning naked, and sperma means seed. Botanists now divide the gymnosperms into four groups: conifers, cycads, ginkgos, and gnetophytes.arrow_forwardWhich statement below is correct regarding the formation of the endosperm in angiosperms?
