To determine: The reason why sexual reproduction is considered costly.
Concept introduction: Asexual reproduction is a common mode of reproduction found in plants in which a single parent can give rise to the offspring. In such mode of reproduction, a part of the plant becomes separated from the parent and grows into a genetically identical plant through mitosis. Certain plant parts such as stem, root, leaf, and buds are specifically modified for asexual reproduction.

- Why is sexual reproduction useful if only half the animals can produce offspring and two separate cells must be combined to form a third?arrow_forwardHow is asexual reproduction different from sexual reproduction?arrow_forward25) Compared to asexual reproduction, the main advantage of sexual reproduction is that it: A) requires less energy B) increases the genetic diversity of the offspring C) can produce more complex offspring D) can produce a greater number of offspringarrow_forward
- (a) Distinguish between asexual and sexual reproduction. Why isvegetativereproduction also considered as a type of asexual reproduction?(b) Which is better mode of reproduction : Sexual or Asexual? Why?arrow_forwardWhat term is associated with sexual reproduction?arrow_forwardWhy do diploid organisms that reproduce via sexual reproduction even bother with meiosis? What is the point of this complex and energetically expensive process?arrow_forward
- Most species reproduce sexually. Some species are entirely asexual, while others can reproduce in both modalities. a) Why is asexual reproduction so rare? b) What can we learn about the factors that maintain sexual reproduction from studying species that can reproduce both sexually and asexually?arrow_forwardIs the presence of large numbers of chromosomes in an organism a hindrance to sexual reproduction?arrow_forwardHow is life maintained through sexual reproduction?arrow_forward
