Chapter 37, Problem 6A
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The edge effect is a phenomenon where two habitat types come into contact. This is where two populations come in contact and changes in population occur at the boundaries. In other words, edge effects come to force when two communities meet at a boundary wherein there is diverse species belonging to both the individual communities thrive. Hence, at the bordering region there is diversity of life due to different mediums, climate, environments, and landscapes. The edges are considered as transition zones where there is a flow of energy and materials. Such regions are considered as interfaces of ecosystem integrating them, allowing sharing of resources and cycling them as well. These regions also capture materials, nutrients and heat from different sources within the two interconnected ecosystems that enhance fertility and productivity.
