Expert Solution & Answer

Summary Introduction

To determine: What makes soil a complex ecosystem.

Introduction: The interactions among the organisms that live together in a particular place and interaction among these organisms with their abiotic environment are referred to as ecosystem. Soils are rich ecosystems that consist of both living and non-living matter with a number of interactions between them.

Explanation of Solution

Soil consists of small particles that vary in size. They are formed by weathering of rocks. They are composed of various organic and inorganic components which are responsible for nutrient cycling, greenhouse emissions, modifying soil structure, and for enhancing plant health. Some farming practices can reduce the mineral content of the soil; the aim of soil conservation is to reduce the risk of soil damage. The number and type of species of microorganisms present in the soil depend upon the environmental conditions, aeration, temperature, pH, and variable food resources. Therefore, the soil may look static, but it is a rich and complex ecosystem.
