Concept explainers
To explain: Why a drop of water collects at surface of rooted stump when cut at dawn, but not in noon.
Concept introduction: The supply of some solutes and water to the aerial system of the vascular plants is conducted by the xylem. There is a network of pipelines extending from roots to the leaves in xylem. Under some conditions like when xylem sap is more dilute than the soil solution water is transported rapidly into the xylem vessel. Solutes and water are essential ingredients of root pressure. The entry of other solutes and water into root cells including xylem tissue of these ingredients is essential for the development of the root pressure.

- Andoy regularly visits his rice field each morning to see if the plants are growing healthy with profuse tillers. He likewise patiently sees if the irrigation is timely set for each paddy to have sufficient water to sustain the growth. As he continues going around places, he noticed some plants that exhibit drying up of tillers, particularly the sheaths, extending up to the leaves. These plants are situated on paddies near the source of irrigation water and scattered within each plot. He is quite alarmed by the condition thereby pulling out few affected plants and he thought of bringing it to Luis, an extension personnel in their municipality. Luckily Luis is around to help him diagnose such abnormality. He interviewed Andoy regarding the environmental conditions and recent cultural practice(s) applied to the plots such as fertilization, application of pesticides, among others. Luis feels that knowing these may help him trim down the possibilities whether the drying may be…arrow_forwardTo investigate the function of the root system, four set-ups will also be prepared. Test tubes 1-3 will be filled with water to about three-fourths full, while only about 5-10 drops of water should be added into tube 4. Three fresh plants with intact roots and rid of the soil, will be placed into test tubes 2, 3 and 4. Roots should be completely immersed in water in tubes 2 and 3 while the root of the plant in tube 4 should not be in contact with (well above) the water. This will establish the setups which are: (a.) plant-free control, (b.) plant immersed in pure distilled water, (c.) plant immersed in distilled water-food color mixture, (d.) un-immersed plant. A few drops of oil should be added in all tubes to form a lipid layer on top of the water column on each set up. The set-ups should sit undisturbed at room temperature for two days. After 2 days, the water level will be observed as well as the condition of the plants in all the test tubes.Interpret the result obtained from each…arrow_forwardWhen describing vegetative propagation, what is meant by the proximal end of a cutting?
