Chapter 36.1, Problem 4LO
Summary Introduction

To discuss: The structure of roots with secondary growth.

Introduction: The underground branching root systems are often more extensive than the aerial part of the plant. The extension of root depth and the spread of a plant differ from that of another plant species, and they also vary among individuals of the same species. For the survival of plant, firm anchorage is essential, so that the stem remains upright, enabling the leaves to absorb sunlight efficiently. The roots absorb water and dissolved minerals. The dissolved minerals are transported from roots to the leaves throughout the plant in the xylem.
