Concept introduction: Bleeding that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract is called gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. There are two types of GI bleeding. The frank, red, or dark, grainy digestive (affected by stomach acids) bleeding that occurs in esophagus, stomach, or duodenum is called as upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Bleeding in jejunum, ileum, colon, or rectum is called as lower gastrointestinal bleeding.
