Last problem: A crop-dusting service is hired to spray a chemical pesticide over a field of broccoli, which I personally think tastes like feet, but some people seem to like. The plane has a 350-gallon tank that at the moment contains 80 gallons of a 0.5% solution, which means that 0.5% of the liquid in the tank is actually pesticide: The rest is water. The goal is to find how many gallons of a pre-mixed 1% solution would need to be added to increase the concentration in the tank to 0.8%.
a. How many gallons of pesticide are currently in the tank?
b. If we add x gallons of the 1% solution, how many gallons total will be in the tank?
c. If we’re adding x gallons of a 1% solution, how many gallons of pesticide are we adding? How many gallons of pesticide will we have total?
d. Now set up an equation that has two different expressions to describe the new amount of pesticide in the tank. One expression uses your answer to Question 8b, along with the fact that the new solution is 0.8% pesticide. The other expression is your answer to Question 8c. Then solve to find the number of gallons that would be needed to make the mixture 0.8% pesticide.
e. How many gallons of the 1% mix would we need to raise the concentration of the tank to 0.9%? Don’t start over from scratch! Just adapt your work from part c.

- A custom-blend bird seed is made by mixing two types of bird seeds costing $0.75 per pound and $1.25 per pound. How many pounds of each type of seed mixture are used to make 200 pounds of custom-blend bird seed costing $0.95 per pound?arrow_forwardZaidah plans a raised flower bed 2 ft high by 12 ft wide by 15 ft long. The mulch, soil, and peat mixture used to fill the raised bed costs 15.75 per cubic yard. What is the total cost of the ingredients used to fill the raised garden?arrow_forwardYou have 40 sheep, and can get a 2/3 of a bushel of wool from each. You want to buy 1100 bricks from the kiln to enclose a sheepfold to protect your flock. The kiln operator charges a shekel of copper for each 5 bricks. The trader from Anatolia wants as much wool as possible, and will give you 7 shekels of copper for each bushel. So obviously you want to sell your wool to the trader, and then buy the bricks. Write this out as an algebraic problem. Give names for all of the quantities, such as sheep, shekels, etc. But can you buy the 1100 bricks you need? How many bushels of wool extra would you have beyond what you need for the bricks, or how many are you missing? How many sheep does that represent?arrow_forward
- Your restaurant serves 50 bowls of French onion soup daily and each serving has 9 ounces of edible portion of onion per portion. Assuming the Yield Percentage on the Whole Onions is 74%, the AP Price for Whole Onions is $2.00 per lb, and the AP Price for Sliced Onions is $4.00 per lb., please answer the questions below.
