To discuss:
The normal physiology, anatomy, and functions of the male reproductive system.
Concept introduction:
The male reproductive system comprises of the group of primary and secondary sex organs that are involved in the process of reproduction in humans. The sex organs involved in the male reproductive system include testes, scrotum, sex glands, spermatic ducts, and penis.
Explanation of Solution
Two structures are involved in the production of male hormones, namely, the testes and the seminiferous tubules. The testes are an oval shaped pair of glands that are located in the scrotal sac. Seminiferous tubules are the channels in the testes where the matured sperms are produced. The matured sperms are transported with the help of reproductive ducts that includes vas deferens, epididymis, ejaculatory duct, and urethra.
The group of sex hormones that are involved in the development and maintenance of the sexual characteristics in males is termed as androgens. Testosterone is an important male sexual hormone. It helps in promoting the primary and secondary sexual characteristics. The primary characteristics refer to the bodily structures that are directly concerned in the reproduction. The secondary characteristics include the development of seminal vesicles, scrotum, and prostate glands. Also, hair and fat distribution, laryngeal enlargement, body musculature, vocal cord thickening are involved in secondary sexual characteristics.
The anatomy, functions, physiology of the male reproductive system is discussed.
