Concept explainers
The correct option for the statement “When two galaxies collide”.
Answer to Problem 3RAT
The correct option for the statement “When two galaxies collide” is option (b).
Explanation of Solution
Galaxies often collide, but because the stars within a galaxy are so far apart from each other, the chances of collisions among the stars from each galaxy are quite small.
The high gravitational forces of the galaxies merely cause each of the colliding galaxies to become distorted in shape. Although when the galaxies of small size collide or merge than the chances of the formation of new stars are very high. However, if the galaxies merge too quickly than many of the newly formed stars are likely to die shortly after their formation.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the correct option for the statement “When two galaxies collide” is option (b).
