Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The nitrogen formed during a lightning strike reacts with oxygen gas to form nitrogen monoxide which further reacts with ozone gas to form a nitrogen dioxide gas and oxygen gas. A balanced overall equation for this process is to be written.
Concept introduction:
Some reactions occur in a sequence. In such type of reactions, a product of one reaction acts as a reactant for the next reaction. Hence, some substances are common to both reactions. For the stoichiometric purposes, the substance that is formed as a product and act as a reactant in the next reaction sequence is eliminated in an overall/net equation.
Following are the steps to write the overall equation for the reactions that take place in a sequence,
Step 1: Write the sequence of the balanced equations.
Step 2: Cancel the common substance(s) by adjusting the equations arithmetically.
Step 3: Obtain the overall balanced equation by the addition of the adjusted equations together.
