All bulbs are identical in the circuit shown to the right. The circuit consists of three parts: (A) the top branch with two bulbs; (B) the middle branch with one bulb; and (C) the battery.
a. Rank the current through A, B, and C, from greatest to least.
b. Rank the voltage across A, B, and C, from greatest to least.
(a)
To Rank: The current through A, B and C from greatest to least.
Answer to Problem 30A
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The bulbs are identical but the number of bulbs is different in two branches. The bulbs are connected in series combination in top branch (A). With increase in number of bulbs in a series circuit, the equivalent resistance increases which means the current would decrease for the same voltage. A and B are connected in parallel which means the two branches have same voltage.
Current through the battery splits into A and B. As A has more resistance than B, so A will have less current than B.
Conclusion:
The rank of current through A, B and C from greatest to least:
(b)
To Rank: The voltage across A, B and C from greatest to least.
Answer to Problem 30A
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The bulbs are identical but the number of bulbs is different in two branches. The bulbs are connected in series combination in top branch (A).
A and B are connected in parallel which means the two branches have same voltage equivalent to that supplied by the battery (C).
Conclusion:
The voltage across A, B and C is same.
