QUESTION 1
In an arc welding operation, a groove weld has a cross-sectional area=0.055 in² and is 24 in long. (Round your final answers to 1 decimal place)
(a) What quantity of heat (in Btu) is required to accomplish the weld, if the metal to be welded is aluminum?
Btu
(b) How much heat must be generated at the welding source, if the heat transfer factor = 90% and the melting factor = 60%?
H=
Btu
Welding is a process that is used to attach pieces of metal to one another. In a certain welding process, small pieces of Al (s) and CuO (s) are placed in a crucible and ignited, causing the following highly exothermic
reaction to occur.
2 Al+ 3 Cuo - 3 Cu + Al,O3
The copper and aluminum oxide melt. The molten aluminum oxide floats to the top of the crucible. When the steel disk below the crucible melts, the molten copper flows into the weld cavity and welds the pieces of metal
together as it cools and solidifies. The setup is represented in the following diagram.
