Concept introduction: The minute openings found in the outer layer (epidermis) of stems, leaves, and other organs in a plant body are called stomata. The size of stomatal opening is regulated by a pair of particular parenchymal cells known as guard cells. Gaseous exchange during photosynthesis and water loss during transpiration is mainly through these openings.
