Concept explainers
To denote: The physical cause of diffusion.
Introduction: Most of the cells necessitate a constant oxygen supply and continuous exclusion of carbon dioxide. These gases of respiration are exchanged between the environment and the mitochondria in the cell by a combination of respiratory gas transport mechanisms such as bulk flow and diffusion.
Explanation of Solution
The physical cause of diffusion is the random motion of molecules in a substance. In a solution, if a certain type of molecule is found to be more concentrated in one region when compared to the neighboring regions, the random motion will carry more molecules away from the concentrated region. It causes a net transport of molecules into the neighboring dilute regions and this process is called diffusion that moves the molecules from place to place in a net fashion.
