An ionic compound forms by the mutual attraction of 2 oppositely charged ion types called cations & anions. Opposite charges attract to form an ionic bond.
Cations are positively charged ions and anions are negatively charged ions. The number of electrons in cations are less than the number of protons. Similarly, the number of electrons in anions is less than the number of protons.
